Released in 2009, Learning from Martigny takes inspiration in the technology of CAPTCHA to generate random compositions of texts, twisted and stretched to create some very unique visual outputs. As a second layer of randomization, the printer has been asked to mix anarchically inks in an Iris printer, each page from each of the edition in the print-run becoming a unique artefact.
Despite being awarded the Most Beautiful Swiss Books award in 2009, Learning from Martigny remains quite unknown while being, I think, one of the first successful attempt at creating an almost fully randomized creative process in designing a book, already 17 years ago, and the glossy pages of this small book feel more and more fascinating and intriguing as you browse through them.
The book was published in 2009 to coincide with the solo exhibition by the artist Valentin Carron, Fibre, Fibre, austere, austere, at La Conservera Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Ceutí (Spain), which ran from 11 December 2009 to 28 February 2010.
