The first issue of Back Cover, released in 2008. The magazine’s seventh (and so far final) issue came out in 2016 with Éditions B42. Three issues preceded this one, published under the name Marie Louise.

At the time, Back Cover was one of the most prominent editorial venues in France for research and writing on graphic design and typography. It became the flagship of B42, the publishing house that graphic design studio deValence launched the same year, and which would go on to release many essential titles on graphic design.

This first issue gathers texts by Peter Bil’ak, Aurélien Froment, Richard Hollis, Annick Lantenois, Pierre Leguillon, Anne Lemonnier, John O’Reilly and Raphaël Zarka, and is set in Dada Grotesk, a typeface released by Optimo and also drawn by deValence a few years earlier.
